Social media rips into Matt Patricia as Lions blown out on Thanksgiving

November 26, 2020

Earlier this month, Kalyn Kahler of Bleacher Report penned a tremendous piece on the struggles that Detroit Lions' head coach Matt Patricia faced early in his tenure with the team, as he attempted to install "The Patriot Way."

Any inroads that the former New England defensive coordinator has made in terms of connecting with his players haven't translated to the field. The Lions were shut out this past Sunday in Carolina, and while their offense rebounded Thursday, the Lions defense was torched by Deshaun Watson, Will Fuller and the Houston Texans in a 41-25 loss.

Following a Thanksgiving loss that wasn't even as close as the final score might lead you to believe, social media tore into Patricia:

It's unclear what the immediate future holds for Patricia. It feels safe to say that the 46-year-old probably won't have a Josh McDaniels-type return to his previous role with the Patriots if (when?) he's fired by the Lions.

While the Patriots haven't had an official defensive coordinator since Patricia left to coach the Lions after the 2017 season, Brian Flores more or less filled that role in 2018, before becoming the Miami Dolphins head coach. Over the last two years, Steve Belichick and Jerod Mayo have split the role. For as strong of a relationship as Patricia had with Bill Belichick, it's probably unlikely that he would allow him to return to his prior post and essentially limit the growth of his own son.
